EVALUATION

Overall
This unit has helped me to develop the way i present myself professionally before meeting other professionals who are potential employers. This has been a subject i have been wanting to learn for some time as i have herd a lot about how to get jobs but have never really been taught as to how you do it. One of the main areas i was wanting to work on was the showreel as i wanted to see how my footage would look when compared together, this is because i feel i have grown as a camera operator and director. Overall i feel i have improved in each of the fields and have learned a lot from this, both in the industry and for general work.

Interview
During this unit we were tasked with having a mock interview to practice competency in an interview, competency interviews are interviews where you provide examples of your skills to answer  questions, this show that you understand the skill and know how to implement it in the work place. When we were preparing for this interview we wrote 5 question to which we had to answer, once we had these question we then had to write our responses to these using a method called STAR. STAR is used for this specific type of interview as it breaks down how to provide these exmaples and answer the question. STAR stands for Situation Task Action Result. An Example of this is shown below:
I was working at the NEC in Birmingham, I was working on a project for worlskills in a team of 3. the task we were given was to make a promo video for worlskills uk. my role in this team was to be a camera operator. when I was working on this I was shooting interviews and gathering cutaways(Footage that works with what the interviewee is talking about) using a DLSR camera. My role there revolved around interacting and filming members of the public. One of the problems that I encountered was with the lighting in the NEC halls, it was very uneven over the whole show floor, what I did to counter this was change the white balance depending on the lighting in the environment. The result of me doing this was that the footage was easier to grade in post as the footage was simpler to correct. what I learned from this was to always check the shot no matter what . what I would do differently is use lights to make the lighting even on the people I am shooting.

The blue sections show Situation, for this you have to set the scene for which you will be using the skill requested. The orange sections then talk about what your task was showing your skill and role. The pink shows the condition and what i had to work with during the shoot, and highlights a problem i had during the shoot. The Green then discusses how i overcame this and what i learned during this specific shoot.

When walking into the interview i was nervous since this interview was staged in front of the class. I was eager to finish the interview and when watching the interview back you can hear that as I was stuttering. When the interview was over i didn't know how it went precisely but when i returned to the room my peers began saying that my interview wasn't bad. What i realized when watching the footage back was that my voice was shaky, for this i found i just need to slow down while speaking. My use of STAR was okay, i managed to give ample examples but to answer the question but what i noticed was that i didn't fully answer the question fully as i didn't always say what i learned and how i implemented it in future projects which i feel would show deeper understanding of those skills.

What i was trying to learn doing this task was i wanted to work on making my interview skills better and also highlight what needs to be improved moving forward. In order to improve these skills i did research on techniques like star and completing practice interviews. When i was doing my practice interview i was doing it on camera and infront of members of my class. This meant i had two sources for feedback, my peers opinion and my own.

What this showed me was that i need to improve my speaking skills, for example i speak to fast and i begin to stutter which makes me look nervous, if i slow it down i improve the way i sound. When i was in the interview i was mainly thinking of finishing it which made me speak faster and begin stuttering. What i learned from this is to take my time as it was making me sound nervous. What i am going to do to make my interview skills better is research more techniques to improve and participate in more interviews before any serious interviews come around.

Formal Letter
I was tasked with making a formal letter and i had limited experience with this previously so i began working on this by looking at previous examples online to get an understanding of the purpose and style of these letters , what i found was lots of examples of inquiries for jobs. What i then began doing was looking for a company that was local as i was only going to mock the email so i could work on it and maybe send it in the future. What i struggled with during the letter was the opening as this is the most important part of the email, but what i did was look at the example i had found and paraphrased what they said in order to get started, once i got past this barrier it flowed quite easily. Once i had completed this i then showed it to someone else to have them read it to double check the quality.

Interview Technique Drama
This project is used to get both production skills and interview skills. The idea behind this is to write and prepare the pre-production for your idea, our idea was to make a piece where the user selects the response so that way they can chose to see the answer they want. Our group would then make all the paperwork for this project to hand it off to another group to shoot. I had to make the storyboard and shot list. What i found out was that i wasn't very good at this type of paperwork as i am good at explaining it for myself but not for others. So what i will do to improve this skill is to make more of this paperwork.

My group then worked on shooting another groups paperwork. When we looked at the paperwork provided i found that we didn't have a finished script but we had 5 questions to ask the interviewee. We also didn't have a location and actors. We then decided on a day for the shoot, we could then find a location and actors. The location was room 52 which is opposite Springbaord TV in the creative studio. The actors that were going to be involved in the project were Chris,Oscar and myself. As this shoot consisted of two main shots we decided to shoot it with two cameras, theses were both canon DSLR's. We would then record with a zoom recorder in order to get clear audio. A problem we ran into was that some of our crew didn't turn up so we had to get the spare actor to run cameras to check the shot for both. This slowed down the shoot but we worked through it and finished the shoot.

For the edit i chose a group that i hadn't worked with so i could then have a fresh piece to work on. The downside to this was there was even more missing paperwork, so i just made put the piece together by watching all of each clip to find the correct take and place it in order on the timeline. Once i had finished this i decided to play with the footage, so i created a VHS effect and added copyright free 80s/90s backing music.

Phone Skills
When we were practicing our phone skills we were split into pairs, then we needed to record us talking to each other as though we were talking on the phone. We were then given some advice as to how we had to improve these skills. Some of these were to smile while on the phone so have a calmer sound to your voice. i found this helped me the most as i stutter when i get nervous. So what i have been doing to improve these skills is to talk more on the phone while smiling and doing some of the other techniques to make it more natural to do these techniques.

CV
As i began this task i got my existing CV and altered it to match some example of CV's for the career that i am looking to do which is being an camera operator. This CV began with a short personal statement speaking about what i have done and the soft skills that i have. This was hard for me as i struggle to talk about myself especially when it is in the third person. So what i did was write it using I and then changed it to Harry afterwards as this was easier to write and i have continued doing this for all my other personal statements i have wrote. The way i looked at other CVs was to break it down into sections, this made it easier to write. Overall i think my CV is good as it explains all my traits while showing me in a positive light which is what is needed from a CV.

  1. A suitable approach to your evaluation. Don't forget there are 6 of these to create using Rolfe et al and evaluative writing... only a short paragraph for each is necessary.

Tony Lecture

this allows the separate audio frequencies to be more prominent among the other sound in the audio piece. When i was working on this window i was trying to create  a wave with the adjusters as audio works in waves this allows the audio to remain level and not have any frequencies that aren't balanced. This window allows the user to altre the frequencies adjusting the allowing the sound to alter depending on the wave form. This is teh audio clip i have been working on and i have been altering this to sound mroe clear and sound the same as the other audio in the track.
